CALA News & Views | Issue 55 | Elevating Engagement

Resident engagement has always been central to strong Assisted Living communities. Today, it is expanding beyond traditional programming. Technology, when used intentionally, is helping deepen connection, reduce isolation and strengthen community life. From immersive virtual reality experiences to modern family engagement platforms, communities are rethinking how they create shared experiences and empower residents to participate in new ways. That shift reflects a broader evolution in how communities approach engagement. “Five years ago, you would plan activities, list them on a calendar and expect residents to show up for the activity,” said Page Ensor, chief executive officer of Gallaher Signature Living Management Group . “Today we’re seeing more curated, purposeful experiences designed for different groups of individuals throughout the day, with multiple programs and events happening at once.” Technology as a Tool for Connection, Not Replacement Technology is not meant to replace human interaction. Instead, it can support and strengthen the relationships that define community life. Technology can support connection in practical ways, particularly when it helps residents remain independent and engaged in daily life. As Ginna Baik, director of business development/age tech for AOL, explained, “technology allows folks with disabilities of any sort, whether they have vision or hearing or mobility challenges, to still feel independent by leveraging technology.” That can include voice-enabled tools that help residents request assistance, access schedules or control their environment more easily. It can also involve smarter, more personalized systems that help staff better understand resident preferences. “AI can create a level of personalization that helps bridge gaps when there’s workforce turnover,” Baik said. “If you have several different caregivers, they may not all remember a resident’s likes and dislikes, but technology can help keep that information consistent and accessible.”
